An Introduction for Prospective New Members
Welcome from the University of California Marching Band! We appreciate your interest in the University, and as one of
Cal's oldest and most respected institutions, we would like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with our
organization. The Band embodies the California Spirit and it is our hope that the information we provide will further
excite you about both the University of California Marching Band (or Cal Band for short) and about Cal in
general. Discover the tradition, excitement, and fun that makes the Cal Band an integral part of the Berkeley
experience!
Sound Interesting?
The Cal Band is always looking for new members to fill its ranks. All Cal students (including graduate and extension students) are welcome to fill out an interest form so that we may provide you with further information. In addition to our online interest form we will have paper forms available at Cal Day and at CalSOs. Prospective members and interested students are also encouraged to attend our own recruiting events, held annually (during the summer) in both northern and southern California. These Bar-b-ques are a great way to see the people and style of the Cal Band. Music auditions are generally held in the spring and summer, and marching auditions are generally held at our Fall Training Program in August. Being in the Band is fun and rewarding, and with a little planning, it doesn't interfere with academic pursuits at all. Generations of Cal Band members testify that being in the Cal Band greatly adds to the enjoyment of the Cal experience!
Some Words From Our Recruiting Committee
It is our pleasure to introduce you the one of the longest-standing traditions here at Cal: the University of California Marching Band. We thank you for expressing your interest in becoming a member of one of the finest institutions this University has to offer. First of all, allow us to congratulate you on your acceptance into such a wonderful academic establishment. Cal is an excellent place to spend the next four years of your educational experience as it houses a wonderful environment rich with culture and tradition. Hopefully you will be able to experience this first-hand as a student here at Cal.
Joining the Band is an excellent way to become involved with the University. The Cal Band is the Pride of California, and is recognized around the Bay Area as a model of musical excellence. Having marched with the Band for a few years now, we can easily say that it has been one of the best experiences in our college lives. It offers a warm social environment into which we were both welcomed and has given us the opportunity to create friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
